The Robots are Here!

SmuttyCat is dismayed at the current chronology of events happening in the robotic world. Which of the Terminator franchise movies did developers and scientists miss? Why, oh why are they trying to end the world? While humans are oohing and ahhing over the BB-8 cutie (which SmuttyCat appaws of as a great cat toy), engineers all over the world are working on something quite different.

A little background; there are several new developments in hardware and software that are bringing us closer to Skynet and the Terminators. First, mind reading computers are now real, just check out the IFLScience site. Chip yourself at your own risk.

Next DARPA’s challenge will show many advanced, not clumsy terminator-style robots in human and animal configurations (see videos below). And now researchers have developed a robot that can seek out and TERMINATE a specific species (starfish) that are threatening the Great Barrier Reef.

Finally, a ‘mother’ robot has figured out how to evolve better children based on the success or failure of previous generations. Hmm, SmuttyCat is building a shelter. Good luck humanity.

What’s Up with Humvees on US23 & I-96?

Humvees Come to Michigan

I96 and US23Summer is long acknowledged as the season of the orange traffic cones in Michigan. Traffic delays go hand in hand with warm summer days and mosquitos on the lake. While traveling north east of the big D, SmuttyCat recently ran into a couple of caravans of Humvees in the construction on I-96 just past Brighton, MI. Looking up on the MDOT website revealed that:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will make major safety and operational improvements to the I-96/US-23 interchange in Brighton Township, Livingston County. The project includes:

  • Constructing new through-lanes on I-96 between the current eastbound and westbound lanes;
  • Building three new bridges over northbound and southbound US-23, and over Old
    US-23;
  • Changing the existing lanes of I-96 to collector-distributor (CD) lanes for easier and safer lane changes for ramp traffic; and
  • Rebuilding the existing six bridges over US-23 and Old US-23.

SmuttyCat is curious why a simple road construction project would require caravans of Humvees. Any Brighton residents know what’s going on? Weigh in in the comments.

What’s Up With That?

Everyone knows SmuttyCat is lazy, but he just had to take a break from catching up on the season finales of his most favorite shows to blog on an outlandish discovery. The story is that humans value chimps over people and their own community.

SmuttyCat’s partner sites DKemp Designs and Infinity Run Media started a community initiative a short while ago. It’s called CoffeeChange.org based on the philosophy that the small change spent on coffee by many people once a month, can create lasting local and global change.

Sounds good, right? Throw a couple of bucks in a virtual bucket once a month and viola! One new business starts or the next genius gets the education needed to cure cancer or end world hunger. What a simple concept.

But SmuttyCat just found out that in 4 days, over $72,000 was raised for abandoned chimps and yet in 2 weeks only $12 has been raised to help a single mom get a stable space to raise her daughter and grow her small business. Now, the backstory is this is a young lady who went to college, got a job, got married, had a child and then went through a divorce while a stay at home mom starting a business. She found herself homeless and unemployed, but managed in less than one year, to buy a car, get a job and an apartment. But the apartment is small and has no yard so there is no way to grow the business. This enterprising person in our community is trying to buy a modest home but has had no time or extra income to save for a down payment or the appliances that will be needed.

CoffeeChange.org is not about fixing all the world’s problems, they are not big enough. They are about leveraging small changes that ripple out through the globe. A $2 donation will not end world hunger or cure cancer. But it can stabilize a small business effort or educate the next genius.

SmuttyCat refuses to believe that there are not 6,000 humans in the Metro Detroit area who won’t donate $2 toward this important project. No, you won’t get a fancy t-shirt (although you can e-mail CoffeeChange.org about buying one of theirs), but for a $2 to $5 dollar donation you can stop complaining and start building.

Spread the word: a cup of coffee can change the world.

Roll Up Your Fur and Get To Work

Obama-Biden-ClintonGood morning America, Smutty is wrapping up his coverage of the 2012 election.  Everyone is exhausted from trying to keep track of the ups and downs but mostly just thankful its over.

Now its time to get to work.  Be serious, every kitten and pup knows that if you give one person more food or toys, they don’t turn around and start passing out the extras.  That is the essence of the “trickle down” theory of economics.  Republicans, let it go.  We are struggling to cut a deficit and provide compassionate safety nets for lower-income humans.

Someone has to pay more, it should be those who can afford it.  Digging in your heels and refusing to budge on tax increases for the rich equates to rewarding a toddler for throwing a tantrum.  Every time he wants something, he will scream like Donald Trump, knowing you are a wuss who will give in.  In the animal kingdom, Smutty just delivers a swift paw to the head and they straighten right up.  Try it, it works.

Businesses large and small; shut up and attend to business.  Paying for healthcare is part of being in business.  If you can’t afford to treat your employees like humans instead of insects to be stomped on, get out of business and get a job.  Oh, what’s that?  There are no jobs?  Cause your rich friends sent their money to the Cayman Islands and their jobs to China?  Take a note from GM and Chrysler who got bailed out and started ramping up their production in the country that stood behind them when times were bad.  Or, look to Ford whose top guy took a $1.00 per year salary until they turned things around.

In other words, suck it up, take responsibility for your own future and be willing to make sacrifices for your business, employees, community and country.  If you cannot do this, get out.  America has enough whiny, arrogant, entitled idiots and one less is a good thing.

Check out the constitution.  It offers equal opportunity for all.  This means that roadblocks to success like crime, poverty, poor education and lack of proper health care an nutrition have to be removed so EVERYONE can rise to their personal best.  Kicking those without access and calling them lazy without leveling the playing field is like peeing in the water hole.  Of no benefit to anyone and a possible killer of everyone.

So, humans (and dogs), Smutty offers you two paws of hope and friendship.  No matter if your candidate won or lost, the work still remains.

Roll up your fur or sleeves and get to work.

Smutty needs a nap now, then back to our regular programming.

Thursday Toons

Smutty found some funny comics around the web and wanted to share.  Have a fun time waiting for Friday.

Smutty will now return to his regular nap schedule.

Never Mind the Election, Watch Out For the Robots!

With the last major hurdle overcome, robots can now begin their planned takeover.  Some idiot has taught them to climb stairs.  Now there’s nowhere to run.

At least we felines can still climb trees.  So, don’t go teaching them that!  Smutty already has his post picked out.  Good luck.

The Informed Opinion

Hey Fox News, check your fact checkers before posting stories.  Make sure they don’t think like this;

What Were They Thinking??

Smutty occasionally takes time out to ponder some questionable Human behaviors.  Yesterday Smutty found out that major sportswear company Adidas, had developed and almost brought to market a pair of sneakers with bright orange shackles attached to the ankles.

Correct me if Smutty is wrong, but isn’t Adidas’ primary customer base young, African American males?  What possible spin could be placed on a product which evokes images of slavery and prison?  There is no way someone in the entire Adidas company did not mention this as a possible issue.  If not, Adidas needs to hire some minorities in Public Relations immediately.

The design was defended by Adidas as being “quirky and lighthearted”.  Smutty wants to know if the designer feels lighting cat and dog tails on fire is considered “quirky and lighthearted” or if he would be offended if a mugger slapped and beat his mother then sold brass knuckles as a “fun” product.  Shackles cannot be considered in a fun or humorous manner by anyone, for any reason.

If Adidas is truly sincere about not intending to offend, they should hire some minorities on the product review team right now.  Smutty is available for consultation.

Meantime, all young males need to sell their Adidas’ and head to the nearest Nike store.  Vote with your wallets and show this company just how “quirky and lighthearted” you feel about their offense.  Smutty will not be gracing any of his 4 feet with any Adidas products.

No Excuse For Rudeness

Smutty had the horrifying experience of witnessing “customer service” in action at a “Human Services” office. The customer was having an emergency of some kind and wanted to talk with her worker.  After calling on the in-house phone several times, she got no response.  She got in line again and politely asked if they would check and see if her worker was in, or send an e-mail to say she was waiting.  The desk person snidely stated “that’s the way they did it on (street name) this is (street name)”.  The customer said there’s no reason to be rude, and was subjected to more rudeness before some other staff intervened.

Smutty knows rudeness when he hears it, and this “customer service” person treated everyone in her line like crap.  We all are aware of the state of the economy, but there is no excuse to treat people seeking help like pond scum.  Most new entrants to the DHS system would rather be anywhere else.  Why mistreat them and make it worse?

Hopefully as the economy gets better, humans will remember their manners.  Otherwise, animals will be better behaved and will tell their kids “don’t act like a bunch of humans”.

Smutty can hope.

Human Holiday Hangups

OrnamentsSmutty enjoys Thanksgiving food as much as the next pet, but apparently humans are more territorial than animals.  Stabbing a guest over a chair is extreme behavior.  Seriously, you couldn’t sit somewhere else?  Now you face felony charges over where you wanted to sit.  Um, cats just find another spot.  This wasn’t even a fight over food, (animals understand that), but over where to put your butt.

And who has time during the busy holidays to hack into someone’s printer and set it on fire?  Get a hobby, there is no advantage to melting the printer of random people.

OK, if you break into someone’s home and hold them hostage, you cannot sue them for breach of contract because they turned you in to the police.  Now that that’s clear, please someone tell this man.  Any contract made at knife point is invalid.  Just because you offered them money does not make it OK that you are holding them at knife point.  If you were stupid enough to fall asleep, sorry chump, go to jail.

Finally, an example of sever overkill; Raiding the Occupy L.A. camp with 1,400 police in the middle of the night.  Not one of the cities evicting the Occupy protesters has addressed the issues.  Not one candidate has addressed the valid concerns of a large population.  The attitude seems to be; just make them go away so the privileged don’t have to look at them while spending money on frivolities.  Maybe more people can take a look at just how many are hurting and spend some money getting families into homes instead of in parks.  Just saying.
