SmuttyCat is a Trekkie, all things Trek are good entertainment.  While SmuttyCat had reservations on the new universe version depicted in the latest iteration of Star Trek movies, he has come around.

The latest movie is packed with effects, action and destruction.  In fact, from the trailers to date, it is hard to imagine a happy, Trek-like ending. So, if you like action, explosions, dare devil leaps and lots of nail-biting, Star Trek Into Darkness is your summer movie. Warping into theaters May 17, it has the unenviable task of following Iron Man 3.

But with a stellar cast, solid script and extra special effects, Star Trek Into Darkness has something for everyone.

Here in the great Midwest the weather has warmed just enough to give SmuttyCat and friends dreams of summer fun.  SmuttyCat has been busy working on his animation debut and missed keeping humans updated with the latest movie and entertainment news.

2013 is shaping up to be another super hero extravaganza.  While Iron Man 3 is the most anticipated and sure to be a blockbuster, there are several other action adventures waiting for the summer 2013 kickoff.

First up, Man of Steel on June 14, where we find out that the “S” on Superman’s chest means hope.  Hmmm, SmuttyCat thought it stood for the House of El as a family crest from Smallville. Well, S drama aside, the trailers all seem to point to another hit movie for Warner.

Check with Techsnoop’s Helper on Friday for a look at After Earth, another great looking summer hit-to-be.

Iron Man 3 New Trailer

SmuttyCat has just watched the newest trailer for Iron Man 3 and can only say; MWOW!!!

The action, drama and effects are all just what we have come to expect from the great Marvel Movie Machine and more.

The glimpse of Tony and Rhodey reaffirms the snappy banter of previous IM movies.  But the best yet is (spoiler alert!); an army of remote controlled armor for back up!

Whoo hoo!  SmuttyCat is dancing on his hind paws in anticipation.  CGI doesn’t get any better than this, and everyone knows SmuttyCat has a thing for robots.

So now, when can SmuttyCat get his hands on an army of remote Iron Man armors?  Anyone have a hook up, cause this would really be helpful in SmuttyCat’s plan to take over the world.

Just sayin’.

Arrow Hits Target

Smutty is a TV connoisseur, and only stays awake for the finest entertainment.  Arrow from CWTV is worth missing a couple of naps.

A re-boot of the Green Arrow backstory, in this iteration, only one of Oliver Queen’s parents dies, his father.  This is sets up the entire framework of the show as the father’s dying wish leads Oliver to his mission to clean up Starling City.  There are secrets, betrayals, changing loyalties and even some teenage angst.  And action, action, action.

Although many DC characters are introduced in the storyline, none is supernatural or alien.  Their powers are all “reality” based and explainable.  The writers are kept on their toes maintaining this premise.  The lack of paranormal based story is very refreshing.  But the best part of Arrow is the great interaction of characters and layers of motivation cleverly peeled back each week.  The flashbacks to Oliver’s time on the island add spice to the current activities.

If you haven’t been watching, Smutty says set your smartphone alarm for Wednesdays at 8:00 pm EST and join in.  Arrow is the most TV fun since Smallville left the screen.

Sorry Darth Disney, There’ll Be No Death Star

DeathStar-DarthThe petition to officially allocate resources  to build a Death Star has been classily declined by the Whitehouse.  Great reasons were outlined such as cost, current space programs, and feasibility, but  Smutty is quite suspicious of the timing of this petition.

After all, Disney recently acquired the Star Wars franchise, and now there is a request for a Death Star???  Smutty thinks there is something funny going on.  Perhaps we need some recent photos of the Disney CEO.  Has there been a hostile takeover?  Hmm…

Well, at least the Whitehouse has shown their openness to alternative and gentler weapons with this video of the President launching the dreaded Marshmallow Cannon.

The Sad Goodbye to Leverage

leveragesliceSmutty is in deep mourning.  For Christmas, TNT brought a lump of coal to fans in the form of cancelling Leverage.

Great television comes few and far between.  Choosing to develop characters well and create complex plots you can’t figure out before the opening credits is an art form.  If you did not have the pleasure of watching this series, you missed a great show.  Go get the DVDs.  If you are a fan, join Smutty in grieving for a smart, well scripted, well acted, creative slice of television heaven.

Those responsible, please watch your legs.  Cats everywhere will be sharpening their claws on your pants.  You have been warned.

Spoiler Alert!

On the plus side, the final episode is a great set up for a new series (hint, hint USA, anyone??).   The cast can incorporate more guest stars and a number of changes to the format that would be great.  It would also be fun to see Elliot using his more than capable brains more often.  Smutty enjoys watching him beat the bad guys down, but a change up would be fun.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching this stand out program, here is the finale for the series.  There are many references to previous episodes, so you may want to start at the beginning.

Christmas Fun for Tykes

Smutty ChristmasThe countdown to Christmas can be nerve wracking for any parent.  If your little ones are waiting not-so-patiently for Santa Claus to show up, Smutty has a couple of great activities for you to distract them.  After all, humans aren’t allowed to swat their young one to the ear when they are annoying.

First up, Reindeer Cam.  This is a great site that integrates with Facebook and shows live footage three times a day of Santa coming out to feed the reindeer.  And you can submit your child’s name to the “nice” list and have them wait for it to scroll across the screen.  Should buy you 15 to 20 minutes of quiet time.  If you are on the go at feeding time, there is an iPhone and iPad app as well as Android and Windows 8 apps available.

Next is the Santa Tracker from NORAD.  It is available in several languages so is great for nearly everyone.  Check out the promo video below.

Last but not least is the North Pole where all of the Christmas action takes place.  There are stories, printable coloring pages and activities to keep young humans busy for hours.  You can even spread out the fun over several days by only choosing one building at a time to focus on.  Easy to navigate by choosing a building that tells you what it is from the workshop to the mailroom.

Smutty wishes you and your furry and non-furry families a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

Rise of the Guardians, a New Superhero Movie

Smutty is always looking for a superhero movie, but does not usually find them in the Holiday films between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  This year is an exception.

Rise of the Guardians is a fresh take on the idea of a superhero and the role of Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Sandman and the Easter Bunny.  The visuals from Dreamworks are as rich and stunning as Smutty could hope for in an animated movie.

And how can you lose with voicing from Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin and Chris Pine?  Smutty believes this is the next holiday classic.

The bad guy here is fear going by the name Pitch.  He of course, wants to take over the world, not understanding that Smutty already has done this.  The concept is fresh, the pacing brisk enough to keep the attention of little humans and the voices snappy and funny.  This movie will make you believe again.

Black Friday Morphs into Black Thursday

Smutty loves turkey and naps.  A day that celebrates both is Smutty’s idea of a perfect holiday.  So, the idea of giving up any part of a day of food, family and napping leaves Smutty baffled.

Why, oh why, would anyone get up from a feast and leave to go shopping?  For stuff no one needs?

What about leftovers?  What about seconds? What about the naps during the Christmas movies?

black Thursday

Smutty says it is time to put an end to the madness.  Keep Thanksgiving sacred.  Don’t shop unless it’s from your couch.  Use your laptop or tablet to browse.  Don’t leave your family to go shopping.

If you do go, don’t complain when you return to no pie or dark meat from the turkey.  Thanksgiving shopping for anything other than gravy and cranberry sauce is just wrong.

Finally a New Take on Zombies

SmuttySmutty likes a good zombie movie as well as the next feline, but lately the whole zombie thing has been a little flat.  Too much sameness, not enough surprises.

But now, Brad Pitt of all humans, has saved us from the dreariness of repetition.  World War Z, the zombie movie you have been waiting for.  Again, the zombies come to us in the form of a virus (what’s up with that, are they cooking some virus that might create zombies), it tracks Gerry Lane (Pitt) as he tries to find the start of the epidemic and end it.  Hey, isn’t this usually Bruce Willis’ job?

If the entire movie lives up to the trailer, Smutty will be a happy feline.  The trailer enlists viewer interest in what happens to the central character and has you rooting for him to win.  This is a critical plot point many action movies ignore.  Smutty actually wants Lane to win.  Some zombie movies are so poorly done Smutty roots for the zombies.

Smutty will bank up some naps so he can catch the scheduled release date in June, 2013.
